MRV Intracranial Scan
An MRV (Magnetic Resonance Venography) of the brain provides high-resolution imaging of the intracranial venous system, including the dural venous sinuses and cerebral veins. This scan is vital for diagnosing venous sinus thrombosis, intracranial hypertension, or unexplained headaches.
What is an MRV intracranial scan?
MRV uses advanced MRI sequences — often with or without contrast — to assess blood flow in the veins of the brain.
It provides a detailed view of:
- Superior sagittal sinus
- Transverse and sigmoid sinuses
- Deep cerebral veins
- SpinInternal jugular veinsal cord, nerve roots, intervertebral discs, and vertebrae
- Venous outflow patterns and obstructions
This scan helps differentiate between arterial and venous causes of neurological symptoms.
Why consider a private MRV scan of the brain?
If you have persistent headaches, visual disturbances, or signs of raised intracranial pressure, an MRV can help detect clots, narrowing, or structural issues in the venous system.
Advantages of a private MRV:
- Rapid access and early diagnosis
- Non-invasive and radiation-free
- Crucial for ruling out venous sinus thrombosis
- Consultant radiologist report in 3 working days
Symptoms that may warrant an intracranial MRV
You may be referred for an MRV if experiencing:
- Persistent, unexplained headaches
- Visual blurring or papilledema (optic disc swelling)
- Pulsatile tinnitus (hearing your own heartbeat)
- Raised intracranial pressure or idiopathic intracranial hypertension
- Suspected cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST)
- Stroke-like symptoms without arterial cause
What can an MRV intracranial scan detect?
MRV is excellent for diagnosing:
- Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST)
- Venous narrowing or stenosis
- Abnormal drainage patterns or flow restriction
- Venous infarction or congestion
- Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH)
- Venous malformations or compressive lesions
- Post-surgical venous changes
Preparing for your MRV scan
Before the scan:
- Remove all metal items, including jewelry and glasses
- Wear comfortable, metal-free clothing
- You may eat and take medication unless instructed otherwise
- Bring past brain imaging or neurology letters if available
Please notify the team if you have:
- You have kidney issues (important if contrast is used)
- You wear a pacemaker
- Pregnancy (especially first trimester)
- You experience anxiety or claustrophobia
