MRI Liver Scan
An MRI of the liver provides highly detailed images of the liver tissue, bile ducts, hepatic vessels, and surrounding structures. This scan is commonly used to evaluate liver lesions, fatty liver disease, fibrosis, cirrhosis, iron overload, or tumors.
What is an MRI liver scan?
MRI uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to create cross-sectional images of the liver — without any exposure to radiation. A liver MRI provides:
- Clear evaluation of liver masses or cysts
- Assessment of liver texture (fibrosis or fatty infiltration)
- Mapping of blood vessels and bile ducts
- Visualisation of adjacent structures (e.g., pancreas, gallbladder)
MRI with contrast (Gadolinium or hepatocyte-specific agents) helps differentiate benign from malignant lesions.
Why consider a private MRI scan for the liver?
MRI is the gold standard for characterising liver lesions and evaluating liver health when ultrasound or CT results are inconclusive.
Advantages of private MRI:
- Appointments usually within 7 days
- Radiologist-reviewed report in 3 working days
- Safer alternative for patients avoiding radiation
- Detailed evaluation for hepatologists and surgeons
Symptoms that may warrant a liver MRI
You may need this scan if you have:
- Abnormal liver function tests (LFTs)
- A liver lesion seen on ultrasound or CT
- Fatigue, jaundice, or right upper abdominal pain
- Cirrhosis, hepatitis, or iron overload
- Cancer staging or liver transplant evaluation
- Suspected vascular liver disease
What can a liver MRI detect?
Liver MRI can accurately diagnose:
- Benign lesions (e.g., hemangiomas, cysts, focal nodular hyperplasia)
- Liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma, metastasis)
- Fatty liver disease or steatosis
- Fibrosis or cirrhosis
- Hepatic iron overload (haemochromatosis)
- Abscesses or inflammatory changes
- Hepatic artery or portal vein abnormalities
Preparing for your liver MRI
Preparation instructions:
- Fasting for 4–6 hours prior to scan
