MRI CholangioPancreatography (MRCP) Scan
An MRCP scan is a specialised MRI technique used to produce high-resolution images of the bile ducts, pancreatic ducts, gallbladder, and surrounding organs. It is a non-invasive alternative to diagnostic endoscopy (ERCP) for detecting gallstones, ductal obstruction, strictures, or tumors.
What is an MRCP scan?
MRCP (Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography) uses advanced MRI sequences to visualise the biliary and pancreatic ductal systems without the need for contrast or endoscopy.
It allows clinicians to assess:
- Common bile duct (CBD) and hepatic ducts
- Pancreatic duct
- Gallbladder and cystic duct
- Ampulla of Vater
- Ductal dilatation, narrowing, or blockage
Why consider a private MRCP scan?
MRCP is a non-invasive and highly sensitive method to evaluate unexplained jaundice, gallstone complications, or chronic pancreatitis. It avoids the risks associated with invasive ERCP procedures.
Benefits of a private MRCP include:
- No radiation or endoscopic risk
- Early and accurate diagnosis
- Consultant radiologist report within 3 working days
- No hospital admission required
Symptoms that may warrant an MRCP scan
You may be referred for this scan if you experience:
- Jaundice or yellowing of skin and eyes
- Right upper abdominal pain or discomfort
- Gallbladder or bile duct stones
- Pancreatitis (acute or chronic)
- Abnormal liver or pancreatic enzyme levels
- Weight loss with digestive symptoms
- Follow-up of ductal abnormalities seen on ultrasound
What can an MRCP scan detect?
MRCP is particularly effective for diagnosing:
- Gallstones or bile duct stones
- Biliary obstruction or strictures
- Pancreatic ductal anomalies or dilation
- Tumors of the pancreas, bile duct, or gallbladder
- Chronic pancreatitis or pseudocysts
- Primary sclerosing cholangitis
- Post-operative ductal anatomy
