MRI Kidneys Scan
An MRI of the kidneys provides high-resolution, non-invasive imaging of the renal cortex, medulla, collecting system, renal arteries, and surrounding tissues. It is used to assess masses, cysts, hydronephrosis, renal artery stenosis, or chronic kidney disease — offering safer evaluation without radiation.
What is an MRI kidney scan?
MRI kidney imaging uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency pulses — sometimes with contrast — to examine:
- Kidney size, shape, and internal structure
- Presence of solid or cystic masses
- Renal arteries and perfusion
- Collecting system, ureters, and renal pelvis
- Associated lymph nodes or surrounding anatomy
MR urography may be included for evaluating the urinary tract and drainage patterns.
Why consider a private MRI scan of the kidneys?
MRI provides precise imaging for renal function and disease without the radiation risks of CT, making it particularly useful for follow-ups or sensitive cases.
Private MRI benefits:
- Early detection of tumors or cysts
- Safer for patients with impaired renal function (if non-contrast)
- No radiation — ideal for repeat follow-ups
- Consultant radiologist report within 3 working days
Symptoms that may warrant a kidney MRI
Your doctor may recommend this scan if you have:
- Flank or abdominal pain
- Blood in urine (haematuria)
- Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Known or suspected kidney masses or cysts
- Unexplained high blood pressure
- Abnormal ultrasound or CT findings
- Post-operative renal surveillance
What can a kidney MRI detect?
MRI scans are effective in identifying:
- Kidney tumors (e.g., renal cell carcinoma)
- Cysts and polycystic kidney disease (PKD)
- Hydronephrosis or obstruction
- Renal artery stenosis
- Ureteral abnormalities
- Inflammatory or infectious changes
- Lymphadenopathy or spread of disease
Preparing for your kidney MRI
Preparation instructions:
- Fasting for 4–6 hours prior to scan
- Avoiding metal accessories
- Bring renal function tests and previous imaging (ultrasound, CT)
- Continue regular medications unless otherwise advised
Let us know in advance if:
- You have known kidney impairment (important for contrast use)
