Scan Types / MRA Abdomen Scan
MRA Abdomen Scan
An MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiography) of the abdomen provides a detailed, non-invasive map of the major arteries and blood vessels supplying the abdominal organs. It is used to detect narrowing, aneurysms, dissections, and vascular malformations — especially in patients with hypertension, aneurysm risk, or vascular disease.
What is an MRA abdomen scan?
MRA uses magnetic fields, radiofrequency pulses, and — if necessary — contrast (Gadolinium) to generate high-resolution images of:
- Abdominal aorta
- Renal arteries
- Mesenteric arteries (SMA/IMA)
- Celiac trunk and hepatic arteries
- Iliac arteries and major branches
It provides excellent visualisation of vessel lumen and walls — ideal for screening vascular conditions and pre-surgical planning.
Why consider a private MRA of the abdomen?
This scan is recommended for patients with suspected vascular abnormalities, especially if CT Angiography is contraindicated due to contrast allergies or kidney impairment.
Advantages of private MRA:
- No ionising radiation
- Safer for repeated imaging or young patients
- Radiologist-reviewed report in 3 working days
- Shorter wait times for early diagnosis and treatment
Symptoms or conditions that may warrant an MRA abdomen
You may be referred for this scan if experiencing or monitoring:
- Resistant or unexplained hypertension
- Abdominal pain of vascular origin (e.g., mesenteric ischemia)
- Abdominal bruit (vascular murmur)
- Known or suspected aneurysm
- Renal artery stenosis (cause of secondary hypertension)
- Vascular malformations or dissection
- Pre-op planning for vascular surgery or stent placement
What can an abdominal MRA detect?
MRA abdomen can accurately detect:
- Aneurysms of the abdominal aorta or branches
- Renal artery stenosis or fibromuscular dysplasia
- Mesenteric ischemia
- Vascular malformations
- Arterial dissection
- Narrowing or occlusion of iliac or hepatic arteries
- Post-surgical vascular mapping
Preparing for your MRA abdomen
Before your scan:
- Fasting for 4–6 hours prior to scan
- Avoid metal-containing clothing or accessories
- Bring previous vascular ultrasound, CT, or surgical reports
- Continuing medications unless advised otherwise
Let us know in advance if:
- You have kidney issues (important for contrast)
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have vascular stents, grafts, or bypass surgery
- You are claustrophobic (sedation available if needed)
