Thoracic Ultrasound Scan (Chest Wall)
A thoracic ultrasound is a focused imaging scan used to assess the soft tissues, muscles, ribs, and superficial structures of the chest wall. It is helpful in diagnosing causes of chest wall pain, lumps, trauma-related injuries, or fluid collections, and is especially valuable in patients with localized swelling or tenderness.
What is a thoracic ultrasound?
This scan uses high-frequency sound waves to create live images of:
- Superficial muscles and soft tissues of the chest wall
- Intercostal muscles and fascial layers
- Rib fractures or periosteal changes (surface of bones)
- Lumps, cysts, or haematomas near ribs or sternum
- Signs of inflammation, infection, or fluid accumulation
Please note: This is not a scan of the internal lungs or heart, but focuses on external chest wall structures.
