Thyroid Ultrasound Scan
A thyroid ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test used to evaluate the thyroid gland and surrounding tissues in the neck. It is the most accurate way to assess thyroid nodules, enlargement (goitre), cysts, and structural abnormalities, and is often the first-line test for patients with thyroid-related symptoms or abnormal blood tests.
What is a thyroid ultrasound?
This scan uses high-frequency sound waves to visualise:
- Thyroid gland structure (size, shape, symmetry)
- Presence of thyroid nodules or cysts
- Signs of inflammation (thyroiditis)
- Blood flow to the thyroid (with Doppler imaging)
- Surrounding lymph nodes or abnormalities
It is painless, accurate, and can detect even small changes within the gland.

This scan is recommended if you have:
- Abnormal thyroid blood tests (TSH, T3, T4)
- A visible or palpable swelling in the neck

Advantages of private ultrasound:
- No radiation
