MRI Small Bowel (Enterography) Scan
An MRI Small Bowel scan, also known as MR Enterography, provides detailed, non-invasive imaging of the small intestine. It is especially useful for diagnosing Crohn’s disease, small bowel inflammation, strictures, tumors, or obstruction, and is an alternative to endoscopy or CT.
What is an MRI small bowel scan?
MRI Enterography uses magnetic fields and oral contrast (fluid) to create high-definition images of the jejunum, ileum, and duodenum. It provides:
- Visualisation of bowel wall thickness and enhancement
- Identification of inflammation or ulceration
- Evaluation of bowel loops, strictures, and fistulas
- Detection of complications like abscesses or obstruction
Patients typically drink a contrast solution beforehand to distend the bowel.
Why consider a private MRI scan of the small bowel?
When investigating suspected inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms, this scan is more comfortable and safer than many invasive procedures.
Advantages of private MRI:
- Non-invasive, no radiation exposure
- Alternative to colonoscopy or capsule endoscopy
- Appointments usually within 7 days
- Radiologist-reviewed report in 3 working days
Symptoms that may warrant a small bowel MRI
You may need this scan if you experience:
- Chronic abdominal pain or bloating
- Unexplained diarrhoea or rectal bleeding
- Weight loss or nutritional deficiencies
- Known Crohn’s disease or IBD
- Previous small bowel surgery
- Suspected small bowel tumors or obstruction
What can a small bowel MRI detect?
This scan is excellent for detecting:
- Crohn’s disease and ulcerative inflammation
- Bowel wall thickening and enhancement
- Strictures and narrowing
- Abscesses or fistulas
- Tumors or lymphadenopathy
- Obstruction or volvulus
- Vascular changes in bowel wall
