Private Breast Ultrasound Scan
A breast ultrasound scan is a quick, safe, and highly effective imaging test used to evaluate breast lumps, pain, asymmetry, or other changes. It is commonly used as a first-line scan for younger women, or as a complementary assessment to mammography.
What is a breast ultrasound?
A breast ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to examine the breast tissue and axillary (armpit) region, providing detailed images of:
- Solid lumps or masses
- Cysts (fluid-filled sacs)
- Asymmetries or areas of thickening
- Nipple discharge origins
- Axillary lymph nodes
- Post-operative or implant complications
It is often used when a mammogram isn’t appropriate (e.g. in women under 40, during pregnancy) or to further investigate a mammographic finding.
Why consider a private breast ultrasound?
You may benefit from this scan if you have:
- Discover a new lump or thickening in your breast
- Have breast pain or discomfort
- Experience nipple discharge or inversion
- Have a history of breast cysts or fibroadenomas
- Require follow-up after surgery, trauma, or previous imaging
- Have dense breast tissue (mammogram less conclusive)
Advantages of private ultrasound:
- No radiation exposure
- Same-week appointments
- Fast reporting by specialist sonographer
- Suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Can be used alongside mammography or as a standalone scan
Symptoms or concerns that may require this scan
Consider this scan if you are experiencing:
- Breast lump or swelling
- Change in breast shape or size
- Localised pain or discomfort
- Recent trauma or injury to breast
- Post-lumpectomy follow-up
- Family history of breast cancer
- Evaluation of breast implants or scar tissue
What can this ultrasound detect?
- Benign breast cysts
- Fibroadenomas (non-cancerous lumps)
- Solid vs. cystic lesions
- Infected or inflamed tissue (mastitis, abscess)
- Axillary lymphadenopathy (swollen nodes)
- Implant rupture or encapsulation (limited)
- Suspicious lesions requiring biopsy referral
