Growth Scan (24–32 Weeks)
A growth scan is performed between 24 and 32 weeks to assess your baby’s development, growth rate and overall well-being. It measures key fetal structures, checks the placenta and amniotic fluid levels, and evaluates blood flow through the umbilical cord. This scan provides reassurance that your baby is growing as expected and helps identify any concerns that may require closer monitoring.
What is a growth scan?
A growth scan uses ultrasound imaging to examine:
- Fetal measurements – head (HC), abdomen (AC) and femur length (FL)
- Estimated fetal weight (EFW) – compared against growth charts
- Fetal heartbeat – strength, rhythm and presence
- Amniotic fluid levels – ensuring they are within a healthy range
- Placenta – location, maturity and blood flow
- Umbilical cord Doppler – assessing nutrient and oxygen supply
This scan is essential for monitoring fetal development and identifying any deviation from expected growth patterns.
Why consider a private growth scan?
You may benefit from this scan if you have:
- Reassurance about baby’s growth and development
- Monitoring growth for mothers with high BMI, diabetes or high blood pressure
- Checking progress after slowed growth detected in previous scans
- Assessing placenta function and blood flow
- Monitoring amniotic fluid levels
- Additional reassurance between routine NHS scans
Advantages of private ultrasound:
- Safe and radiation-free
- Allows more time for personalised reassurance
- No referral required
- Consultant sonographer report provided
- Comfortable and family-friendly environment
Symptoms or concerns that may require this scan
Consider this scan if you are experiencing:
- Reduced or altered fetal movements
- Concerns about baby’s size or bump growth
- High-risk pregnancy factors (diabetes, hypertension)
- Previous complications affecting fetal growth
- Anxiety or need for reassurance between appointments
- Unexplained abdominal discomfort
What can this ultrasound detect?
- Normal or restricted fetal growth
- Large-for-gestational age (LGA) assessment
- Estimated fetal weight (EFW) trends
- Placenta position and maturity
- Amniotic fluid abnormalities (too much or too little)
- Umbilical cord blood flow concerns
- Fetal position for birth preparation
Preparing for your growth scan
Preparation instructions:
- A moderately full bladder may improve earlier visibility
- Wear comfortable clothing for easy access to the abdomen
- No fasting required
- Partners or family members may attend if permitted
- Scan time: ~ 30 minutes
Inform the team if:
