Upper Limb Venous Doppler Ultrasound Scan
An upper limb venous Doppler ultrasound is a diagnostic scan used to evaluate blood flow through the deep veins of the arms, helping detect or rule out upper limb deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or venous obstruction. It is commonly used in patients with arm swelling, pain, or recent IV line placements.
What is an upper limb venous Doppler scan?
This scan uses Doppler ultrasound technology to evaluate:
- Subclavian, axillary, brachial, and radial/ulnar veins
- Compressibility and flow dynamics in major veins
- Presence of clots or obstruction in deep venous systems
- Post-line complications, such as PICC or central venous catheter clotting
It may be performed on one arm (unilateral) or both arms (bilateral).
Why consider a private upper limb Doppler scan?
You may benefit from this scan if you have:
- Swelling or pain in the arm, shoulder, or upper chest
- Recent PICC line, cannula, or chemotherapy port insertion
- Suspected thrombosis after IV therapy or trauma
- Redness or warmth in one arm
- Past history of clots or known clotting disorders
Advantages of private ultrasound:
- No wait times; rapid access
- Accurate diagnosis without radiation
- Consultant sonographer interpretation
- Avoid complications like pulmonary embolism or loss of access line
- Suitable for all ages including post-surgical and oncology patients
Symptoms or concerns that may require this scan
Consider this scan if you are experiencing:
- Pain or heaviness in one arm
- Arm swelling or colour changes
- Recent use of IV line or catheter
- Shortness of breath (risk of embolism)
- History of DVT or clotting disorders
- Arm vein engorgement or tenderness
What can this ultrasound detect?
- Acute or chronic DVT of upper limb
- Catheter-associated thrombosis
- Non-occlusive thrombus or narrowing
- Venous reflux or flow abnormalities
- Collateral vein formation
- Post-surgical or trauma-related venous issues
Preparing for your upper limb Doppler scan
Preparation instructions:
- No special preparation needed
- Wear short sleeves or sleeveless top if possible
- You will lie flat with arms positioned for access
- Scan time: ~20–30 minutes
Inform the team if:
- You are on anticoagulants or chemotherapy
