What these tests look at
These tests look at markers linked to your bones and joints. They include calcium, vitamin D, markers of inflammation, and urate, which is linked to gout. You can book one test or a panel.
You might book one for joint pain or stiffness that will not settle, if an inflammatory arthritis has been mentioned to you, or to check bone health. Blood tests can be used alongside a scan rather than instead of one.
On the day, a small blood sample is taken from your arm. If the joint itself needs looking at, an MSK ultrasound or MSK MRI can do that, with a written radiologist report included.

Can a blood test show what is causing my joint pain?
Not on its own. Blood tests can help show inflammation or markers linked to gout, but they cannot see the joint. A scan such as MSK ultrasound or MSK MRI looks at the joint itself.
Which blood test is used for gout?
Urate, sometimes called uric acid, is the marker usually checked. A blood test on its own does not diagnose gout, so results are read alongside your symptoms. A GP consultation, which is a separate service, can help you go through them.
Do I need a referral for a bone or joint blood test?

Should I have a blood test or a scan for my joint?
