About spine MRI scans

What these scans look at

A spine MRI looks at the bones of the spine and the soft tissues around them. That includes the discs, the spinal cord and the nerves that run down to your arms and legs.

We offer five scans: cervical (neck), thoracic (mid back), lumbar (lower back), cervicothoracic (neck and mid back together), and whole spine, which is the largest option. Choose the area your symptoms point to.

People often book after back or neck pain that has not settled, sciatica, or pins and needles in an arm or leg. If symptoms start suddenly or are getting worse quickly, get medical advice before booking a scan.

Extremely easy to book; great appointment choices and superb service — thanks, Becky. Same day booked. Result discussed after scan and report and images emailed within 2 hours. NHS “urgent” referral was 6 months! Highly recommended.

Common questions

Spine MRI questions, answered

Which spine scan should I book?

Pick the area your symptoms are in: neck, mid back or lower back. If you are not sure, ask your GP which area to scan, or call 0800 151 2227 and we will explain what each scan covers.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book a spine MRI directly online, by phone or on WhatsApp. Prices start at £295 and the written radiologist report is included.

Can an MRI show what is causing my sciatica?

A lumbar spine MRI looks at the discs and nerves in the lower back and can help show what may be involved. A radiologist explains the findings in your written report.

Is there anything I should tell you before I book?

Yes. MRI uses a strong magnet. Tell us if you have a pacemaker, a metal implant, a clip or any metal in your body, or if you are or might be pregnant. Call 0800 151 2227 if you are not sure.

Will I need contrast dye?

Only when it is clinically required. Gadolinium contrast is an optional add-on at £120 and needs clinical confirmation before booking, so nothing is added to your price unexpectedly.

What happens during the scan?

You lie still on a padded table while the scanner takes images. It is noisy, so you get ear protection. MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves, with no ionising radiation.
