What happens during an ultrasound of the right forearm?
A qualified sonographer will apply a warm, water-based gel to your forearm. They will then gently move a small probe over the skin. The probe sends sound waves into your body, and the returning echoes are used to create images on a screen. The scan is painless and typically takes around 15-30 minutes.
How soon will I get my results?
Your scan images will be reviewed by a UK-certified Consultant Radiologist. A detailed report is usually available within 72 hours. You can access your report and images via our secure online patient portal, and you can choose to have a copy sent to your GP.
Can an ultrasound show if I have a fracture?
Ultrasound is excellent for visualising soft tissues like muscles, tendons, and nerves. While it can sometimes show fluid associated with a fracture, X-ray or CT scans are generally better for assessing bone integrity and diagnosing fractures directly. Your clinician will advise the most appropriate scan for your specific concern.
Is there any downtime after the scan?
No, there is no downtime required after an ultrasound of the forearm. You can resume your normal activities immediately after the appointment.
