What these scans look at
Musculoskeletal ultrasound uses sound waves to look at the soft tissues around a joint: tendons, muscles, ligaments and the fluid-filled sacs called bursae. There is no radiation. We scan the shoulder, knee, elbow, wrist, hand, ankle, foot, forearm and hip.
You might come with a tendon or muscle injury, swelling or a lump near a joint, or joint pain that has not settled. The scan can watch a tendon move as you use it, and nothing encloses you.
On the day you uncover the area being scanned. Warm gel goes on the skin and a small probe is moved over it. You may be asked to bend or move the joint. Your written radiologist report is included.

What does a musculoskeletal ultrasound look at?
It looks at the soft tissues around a joint: tendons, muscles, ligaments and bursae. It can help show things like swelling, fluid or a tear. A radiologist reviews the images and writes a report.
Ultrasound or MRI: which one do I need?
They are used for different things. Ultrasound uses sound waves and no radiation, and can watch a tendon move in real time. MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves, with no ionising radiation. If you are unsure, ask us or book a GP consultation, a separate service.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No. You can book yourself online, by phone on 0800 151 2227, or on WhatsApp. The price is fixed and includes your written radiologist report. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.
What is an ultrasound guided injection?
That is a treatment, not a scan. Ultrasound is used to guide the needle to the right spot. Because it is a procedure, a clinician checks it is suitable for you before it is arranged. Start online, on WhatsApp, or call 0800 151 2227.
Can I have both sides scanned?
Yes. Scans are available for the left side, the right side or both. The price is fixed and shown before you book, with no hidden fees, and your written radiologist report is included.
