About this scan

What is an Ultrasound Hip Left?

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves — no radiation and no injections — to produce real-time images of soft tissues and organs.

An Ultrasound Hip Left allows your radiologist to examine:

  • The muscles and tendons around the hip joint, such as the gluteal muscles and hip flexors.
  • The fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion the hip joint, looking for inflammation or fluid build-up.
  • The outer surfaces of the hip bones (femur and pelvis).
  • The ligaments that help stabilise the hip.
  • The presence of fluid collections or cysts in the hip area.

Ultrasound is safe, painless, and radiation-free — making it a first-line investigation for many conditions of the hip left.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can an ultrasound show if I have arthritis in my hip?

An ultrasound can show changes such as fluid around the hip joint or thickening of the joint capsule, which can be associated with inflammatory conditions. However, X-rays and CT scans are often better for assessing the bone and cartilage changes typical of osteoarthritis. Your findings will be reported by a Consultant Radiologist, and you should discuss them with your clinician.

Is an ultrasound scan safe for my hip?

Yes, ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves and is a very safe imaging technique. It is painless, non-invasive, and does not use any ionising radiation. It is completely safe for use in pregnancy and with common medical devices.

How long will my left hip ultrasound take?

Your ultrasound appointment will typically take around 15-30 minutes. This allows ample time for the sonographer to capture clear images of your left hip.

What happens after my hip ultrasound?

Your scan images will be reviewed by a UK-certified Consultant Radiologist. You will receive access to your secure online patient portal within 72 hours, where you can view and download your images and report. You can choose to share the report with your GP or other healthcare provider.

How quickly can I get a scan?

Most MRI, ultrasound, and X-ray scans at MyScanHub can be booked same-day or next-day. Walk-in slots are available for X-rays most weekdays.

Do I need a GP referral?

No — MyScanHub accepts self-referral for most scans. Our consultant radiologists review every case. Some scans (e.g. contrast studies) do need a referring clinician; we'll let you know at booking.

When will I get my report?

Written reports from a GMC-registered consultant radiologist are delivered within 72 hours of your scan, often sooner. You can access the report — and the imaging — through your patient account on portal.myscanhub.com.

Is my data kept private?

Yes. MyScanHub is CQC-registered and fully GDPR-compliant. Your imaging and report are encrypted in transit and at rest, and only shared with parties you explicitly authorise.
