How long does an ultrasound knee scan take?
An ultrasound scan of both knees typically takes around 20-30 minutes to complete. We aim to offer appointments with minimal waiting times.
What happens during the scan?
A trained sonographer will apply a warm, water-based gel to your knees. They will then move a small handheld probe over the skin, which sends sound waves into your knee and picks up the echoes. You may be asked to move your knee during the scan. The probe is gently pressed onto the skin, but it is not painful.
When will I get my results?
Your ultrasound images will be reviewed by a UK-certified Consultant Radiologist. You will typically receive your detailed report within 72 hours. You can access your results and images via a secure online patient portal, and you can choose to share them with your GP.
Can I self-refer for a knee ultrasound?
