About vascular ultrasound scans

What these scans look at

Vascular ultrasound, often called a doppler scan, uses sound waves to watch blood moving through your vessels. There is no radiation. We scan the carotid arteries in the neck, the abdominal aorta, and the veins in the legs and arms.

People book these for leg swelling, aching legs or varicose veins, to check circulation, or alongside NHS follow-up for an aneurysm they already know about. These scans are for planned checks, not sudden or severe symptoms.

On the day you uncover the area being scanned. Warm gel goes on the skin and a probe is moved over it. You may hear a whooshing sound, which is the blood flow. Your written radiologist report is included.

Extremely easy to book; great appointment choices and superb service — thanks, Becky. Same day booked. Result discussed after scan and report and images emailed within 2 hours. NHS “urgent” referral was 6 months! Highly recommended.

Why MyScanHub

Why book your vascular ultrasound scans with us

No Radiation Involved

Doppler ultrasound uses sound waves to see blood moving through your vessels. It is done from the surface of the skin.

One Side or Both

You can book a leg or arm vein scan for the left side, the right side, or both together.

Neck and Aorta Checks

Carotid doppler looks at the neck arteries. An abdominal aorta scan can be used alongside, not instead of, NHS aneurysm checks.

Report Included, Fixed Price

Fixed self-pay price with a written radiologist report. No GP referral, no hidden fees, free cancellation up to 24 hours beforehand.

Common questions

Vascular Ultrasound questions, answered

My calf is hot, swollen and painful. Should I book a scan?

No, not as a first step. That needs same-day medical assessment, and sudden breathlessness or chest pain is an emergency. Please follow the urgent care note on this page rather than booking a scan.

What is a doppler scan?

It is an ultrasound that shows blood moving, not just the shape of the vessel. Sound waves bounce off the moving blood, so the scan can show the direction and speed of flow.

Which vascular scan should I choose?

It depends on where the problem is. Leg or arm swelling usually points to a vein scan of that arm or leg. Neck arteries are a carotid doppler. If you are unsure, call 0800 151 2227 or book a GP consultation.

Do I need a referral, and how do I book?

No referral is needed. You can book online, by phone on 0800 151 2227, or on WhatsApp. Prices are fixed self-pay with no hidden fees, the written radiologist report is included, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before your appointment.

I have had a mini-stroke or sudden weakness. Can I book a carotid scan?

Not as a first step. Sudden face drooping, arm weakness or slurred speech is an emergency, and symptoms that have passed still need urgent NHS assessment. A carotid doppler is for planned checks afterwards.

What happens after the scan?

A radiologist reviews the images and writes a report, which is included in the price. A scan does not give a diagnosis on its own, so your own GP, or a GP consultation with us as a separate service, can go through what it means.
