Frequently asked questions
What is IV contrast and why is it used in an MRI?
An intravenous (IV) contrast agent is a special dye injected into a vein during the scan. It helps to highlight certain tissues, blood vessels, and abnormalities, making them clearer on the images. This can provide more detailed information for your radiologist.
How long does an MRI with IV contrast take?
A typical MRI scan, including the time for contrast injection and image acquisition, usually takes between 30 to 45 minutes for a single area. Your appointment may be longer to allow for preparation and any necessary checks.
Will I receive my MRI results straight away?
Your scan images will be reviewed by a UK-certified Consultant Radiologist. You will typically receive your detailed report within 3 working days via your secure online patient portal. You can then share this with your GP or referring clinician.
Can I drive after my MRI scan?
Yes, you can usually drive after an MRI scan, as there are no sedatives involved and no lingering effects from the magnetic field or radio waves. If you feel unwell for any reason, please arrange alternative transport.
Do I need a GP referral?
No — MyScanHub accepts self-referral for most scans. Our consultant radiologists review every case. Some scans (e.g. contrast studies) do need a referring clinician; we'll let you know at booking.
When will I get my report?
Written reports from a GMC-registered consultant radiologist are delivered within 3 working days of your scan, often sooner. You can access the report — and the imaging — through your patient account at myscanhub.com.
