About MR arthrograms

What these scans look at

An MR arthrogram is an MRI of one joint, done after a small amount of contrast is injected into the joint itself. The contrast spreads inside the joint and can help show the soft tissues there more clearly.

It may be considered when a standard MRI has not given a clear answer, for example where a tear inside the joint is being looked into. A consultant may have suggested one to you. We offer hip, shoulder and wrist arthrograms.

Because it involves an injection, this is a procedure rather than a simple scan. A clinician checks it is suitable for you first, then explains what to expect on the day. You can start online, on 0800 151 2227, or on WhatsApp.

Common questions

MR Arthrograms questions, answered

Why does an MR arthrogram need a clinical check first?

Because it involves an injection into the joint, it is a procedure rather than a standard scan. A clinician checks it is suitable for you first. You can start online, on WhatsApp, or call 0800 151 2227.

What is the difference between an MRI and an MR arthrogram?

A standard MRI scans the joint on its own. An arthrogram adds contrast into the joint first, which can help show the soft tissues inside the joint more clearly.

Will the injection hurt?

We will not promise it is painless. The clinician carrying it out will explain exactly what to expect, step by step, and answer your questions before anything starts.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No, you do not need a GP referral. A consultant may have suggested an arthrogram to you. Either way, our clinician will check it is a suitable test before anything is arranged.

What does it cost, and can I cancel?

The price is fixed and agreed with you before you book, with no hidden fees, and the written radiologist report is included. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before your appointment.

Does the price include the contrast?

Everything included in your arthrogram is set out before you book, so there are no hidden fees. Where MRI contrast (gadolinium) is clinically required as an add-on, it costs £120, and a clinician checks this with you before booking.
