What these scans look at
An abdominal ultrasound uses sound waves to make pictures of the organs inside your tummy. There is no radiation. We offer four scans, covering the abdomen, the abdomen and pelvis together, the liver and gallbladder, and groin or abdominal wall hernias.
People often book one for tummy pain that will not settle, bloating, suspected gallstones, or a lump in the groin. A scan is not the right route for symptoms that come on suddenly or are getting rapidly worse.
You will usually need to fast before an abdominal scan. We confirm exactly what to do when you book. On the day, warm gel goes on your skin and a small handheld probe is moved over your tummy. Most people find it comfortable.

Do I have to fast before an abdominal ultrasound?
Usually yes. Fasting helps us see the gallbladder and other organs clearly. We confirm the exact preparation you need when you book, so you know before your appointment day.
Can an ultrasound show gallstones?
Ultrasound is commonly used to look at the gallbladder and liver, and can help show gallstones. The radiologist reviews the images and explains the findings in your written report.
What happens during the scan?
You lie on a couch with your tummy exposed. Warm gel is applied and a small probe is moved over the skin. Most people find it comfortable, and you can tell us if it is not. You may be asked to breathe in and hold.
Can I cancel or change my appointment?
