What these scans look at
A gynaecological ultrasound looks at the womb, the ovaries and the area around them. It uses sound waves, so there is no radiation. It can help show things like fibroids, ovarian cysts and the thickness of the womb lining.
People book for pelvic pain, heavy or irregular periods, for fertility planning, or to keep an eye on known fibroids or cysts. A scan can help show what is going on, but it is not a substitute for urgent care.
A transabdominal scan is done over your lower tummy with gel, usually with a full bladder. A transvaginal scan uses a slim probe placed gently inside the vagina, with an empty bladder. A written radiologist report is included with either.

Gynaecological Ultrasound questions, answered
What is the difference between a transabdominal and a transvaginal scan?
A transabdominal scan is done over the lower tummy with gel. A transvaginal scan uses a slim probe inside the vagina, which sits closer to the womb and ovaries and can give a clearer view.
Does a transvaginal scan hurt?
Most people find it uncomfortable rather than painful, a bit like a smear test. You undress from the waist down, are covered with a sheet, and can ask us to stop at any point.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book any of these scans yourself, online, by phone on 0800 151 2227, or on WhatsApp. The price is fixed and includes a written radiologist report, with no hidden fees.
Can I have the scan during my period?
Yes, you can. Some people prefer to rebook if bleeding is heavy, and cancelling is free up to 24 hours before your appointment. Just let us know as early as you can.
Will someone explain my results?
A written radiologist report is included with every scan. If you would like to talk it through, we also offer GP consultations as a separate service, and you can share the report with your own doctor.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes. You are welcome to bring someone you trust to your appointment. Tell us when you book, or just ask on the day.
