What is a Fertility Ultrasound Scan?
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves — no radiation and no injections — to produce real-time images of soft tissues and organs.
Ultrasound is safe, painless, and radiation-free — making it a first-line investigation for many conditions of the womb and ovaries.

What a Fertility Ultrasound Scan can find
Ultrasound can identify:
- Ovarian reserve (antral follicle count)
- Follicle development and ovulation timing
- Womb lining thickness and appearance
- Ovarian response to stimulation
- Structural abnormalities of the womb or ovaries
What it cannot do
Gynaecological ultrasound is an excellent first-line investigation but has inherent limitations. A normal pelvic ultrasound does not exclude all pelvic or gynaecological pathology. Findings should be discussed with your GP or gynaecologist. If you experience heavy bleeding, acute pelvic pain or other urgent symptoms, please seek immediate medical review and do not wait for your scan appointment.
What happens on the day
- 1Check in at our clinic in the Guildhall Outer Car Park at Bluewater. Parking is free.
- 2The sonographer explains the scan first, and nothing happens without your agreement. For the internal part, a slim covered probe is gently placed in the vagina; it is not usually painful, and you can ask to stop at any time.
- 3A chaperone is available on request and will never be refused.
- 4The scan takes about 20 minutes. There are no needles and nothing to recover from: you can drive and go back to work straight away.
- 5Your written report is uploaded to your secure patient account within 72 hours.
Transabdominal or transvaginal?
A transabdominal scan looks through the lower tummy with a full bladder and gives an overview of the womb and ovaries. A transvaginal scan uses a slim internal probe, gets much closer, and shows the lining of the womb and the ovaries in more detail; it is the better choice for most gynaecological symptoms. The combined scan does both. Whichever you book, an internal scan only ever happens with your agreement on the day.
Preparing for your Fertility Ultrasound Scan
On the day of your scan:
- For baseline assessment: ideally on days 2 to 5 of your cycle
- For follicle tracking: on the day requested by your fertility team
- Empty your bladder before the internal scan
Please notify the team if:
- You are pregnant or might be pregnant
- You have any open wounds or skin infections in the scanning area
- You have relevant medical history (diabetes, cardiac, blood thinners)
- You have allergies to latex or ultrasound gel
Your report

Frequently asked questions
When in my cycle should I have a fertility scan?
For a baseline assessment, ideally on days 2 to 5 of your period, when the small follicles can be counted most reliably. For follicle tracking, on the day your fertility team asks for; tell us where you are in your cycle when you book.
What is an antral follicle count?
The number of small follicles seen in both ovaries at the start of the cycle. It gives a picture of ovarian reserve and is read alongside an AMH blood test, which we also offer.
Can I have a chaperone?
Yes. A chaperone is available on request and will never be refused. You are welcome to bring someone with you as well.
Will I need an internal scan?
A transvaginal scan is an internal scan, using a slim covered probe. It is explained first, is not usually painful, and only happens with your agreement; you can ask to stop at any time.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly, and every scan is reported by a consultant radiologist or a clinical specialist sonographer. You can share the report with your GP afterwards.
When will I get my report?
Your written report, from a GMC-registered consultant radiologist or an HCPC-registered clinical specialist sonographer, is delivered securely to your patient account within 72 hours of your scan, with your images alongside it.
Where is the clinic?
Our imaging centre is at Bluewater Shopping Centre, Dartford, Kent (DA9 9ST), in the Guildhall Outer Car Park — free parking, a few minutes from junction 2 of the M25 and the A2. We're open Monday to Saturday 8am–9pm and Sunday 10am–5pm. Full directions are sent with your booking confirmation.
