What is an MRI Ankle Both Scan?
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses powerful magnets and radiofrequency waves — with no ionising radiation — to create high-resolution cross-sectional images.
An MRI Ankle Both Scan allows your radiologist to examine:
- Ligaments (like the ATFL, CFL, PTFL, deltoid ligament)
- Tendons (including the Achilles tendon and peroneal tendons)
- Cartilage within the ankle joint
- Bones of the ankle (talus, tibia, fibula, calcaneus)
- Joint fluid and the joint capsule
- Nerves and blood vessels around the ankle
MRI offers unmatched soft-tissue contrast and is widely used in specialist care for diagnosing and following-up disease of the ankle both.
Is this scan right for you?
Common reasons for having this scan include:
- Persistent ankle pain that doesn't improve
- Swelling or stiffness in the ankle joint
- A feeling of instability or 'giving way' in the ankle
- Difficulty bearing weight or walking
- A history of ankle injury or trauma
- Suspected ligament or tendon damage
- Pain that interferes with daily activities or sports
What an MRI Ankle Both Scan can find
MRI can identify:
- Ligament sprains and tears
- Tendon injuries, including tendonitis and tears
- Cartilage damage or wear
- Bone bruising or stress fractures
- Inflammation within the joint
- Cysts or fluid collections
- Early signs of arthritis

Frequently asked questions
How long does an MRI ankle scan take?
A typical MRI scan of both ankles takes between 30 and 45 minutes to complete. We aim for minimal waiting times.
Will I get a diagnosis straight after the scan?
The MRI scan creates detailed images. A UK-certified Consultant Radiologist will review these images and provide a detailed report. You will receive access to your report and images, and your clinician will discuss the findings with you.
Can I have an MRI if I have metal in my body?
This depends on the type of metal and its location. It's crucial to inform our team about any metal implants or fragments when you book, as some are safe while others may not be compatible with MRI. We will guide you through this.
What if I'm anxious about the scan?
We understand that enclosed spaces can be difficult for some. MyScanHub uses modern, wider-bore MRI scanners, and our radiographers are experienced in supporting patients who feel anxious. Please let us know your concerns when you book.
Do I need a GP referral?
No — MyScanHub accepts self-referral for most scans. Our consultant radiologists review every case. Some scans (e.g. contrast studies) do need a referring clinician; we'll let you know at booking.
When will I get my report?
Written reports from a GMC-registered consultant radiologist are delivered within 3 working days of your scan, often sooner. You can access the report — and the imaging — through your patient account at myscanhub.com.
