What is an MRI Elbow Scan?
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses powerful magnets and radiofrequency waves — with no ionising radiation — to create high-resolution cross-sectional images.
An MRI Elbow Scan allows your radiologist to examine:
- Bones of the elbow (humerus, radius, ulna)
- Cartilage surfaces within the joint
- Ligaments, including the collateral ligaments
- Tendons, such as the biceps and triceps tendons
- Nerves passing through the elbow, like the median, ulnar, and radial nerves
- Blood vessels in the elbow region
MRI offers unmatched soft-tissue contrast and is widely used in specialist care for diagnosing and following-up disease of the elbow.
Is this scan right for you?
Common reasons for having this scan include:
- Persistent elbow pain that doesn't improve
- Swelling or stiffness in the elbow joint
- Reduced range of motion or difficulty bending/straightening the elbow
- A feeling of instability or clicking in the elbow
- Numbness or tingling in the arm or hand, potentially related to nerve compression
- Pain that worsens with specific activities or gripping
- Following an injury, to assess the extent of damage
What an MRI Elbow Scan can find
MRI can identify:
- Injuries to ligaments, such as sprains or tears
- Tendon issues, like tendinitis or tears (e.g., tennis elbow, golfer's elbow)
- Cartilage damage or wear
- Inflammation within the joint (synovitis)
- Cysts or fluid collections
- Certain types of bone or soft tissue abnormalities
- Nerve entrapment or irritation
