About musculoskeletal MRI scans

What these scans look at

Musculoskeletal MRI looks at the soft tissues in and around a joint. That includes ligaments, tendons, cartilage, muscle and bone. It can help show changes in those tissues.

We offer 49 scan areas across the body: knee, shoulder, hip, ankle, elbow, wrist, hand, foot, finger, forearm and brachial plexus. Left, right or both sides are available.

On the day you lie still on a padded table while the scanner takes images. It is noisy, so you are given ear protection. MRI uses no ionising radiation, and nothing is injected as standard.

Because of the magnet, tell us before you book about any metal implants, clips, pacemakers or metal fragments. Gadolinium contrast is an optional £120 add-on, used only when clinically required, and it needs clinical confirmation first.

Do I need a GP referral for a musculoskeletal MRI?

No. You can book directly with us online, by phone on 0800 151 2227, or on WhatsApp. Your written radiologist report is included in the price.

How does the pricing work?

It is a fixed, self-pay price with no hidden fees, and the written radiologist report is included. You see the price for the area you choose when you book, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

Can I have both sides scanned, for example both knees?

Yes. Most areas are available as left, right or both sides. Choose the option you need when you book, or ask us if you are unsure which to pick.

Is an MRI scan safe?

MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves, not ionising radiation. Because of the magnet, tell us before booking about any metal implants, clips, pacemakers or metal fragments.

Will I need an injection of contrast dye?

Usually not. Gadolinium contrast is an optional £120 add-on, used only when it is clinically required, and it needs clinical confirmation before you book.

Should I be seen by someone before I book?

You do not need a referral, so the choice is yours. If your injury has not been looked at yet, speaking to your GP first can help make sure the right area is scanned. Your report can then go back to them.
