What is an MRI Foot Scan?
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses powerful magnets and radiofrequency waves — with no ionising radiation — to create high-resolution cross-sectional images.
An MRI Foot Scan allows your radiologist to examine:
- Bones of the foot (tarsals, metatarsals, phalanges)
- Joints within the foot, including the ankle joint
- Ligaments that provide stability to the foot and ankle
- Tendons that enable movement
- Nerves and blood vessels
- Soft tissues such as fat and muscle
MRI offers unmatched soft-tissue contrast and is widely used in specialist care for diagnosing and following-up disease of the foot.
Is this scan right for you?
Common reasons for having this scan include:
- Persistent pain in the foot that doesn't improve
- Swelling or bruising that is difficult to explain
- Difficulty bearing weight or walking
- A feeling of instability in the foot or ankle
- Suspected fracture after an injury
- Numbness or tingling in the foot
- A visible lump or swelling
What an MRI Foot Scan can find
MRI can identify:
- Injuries to ligaments, such as sprains
- Tendon issues, like tendinitis or tears
- Stress fractures or other bone injuries
- Arthritis and inflammation within the joints
- Cysts or fluid collections
- Nerve entrapment or irritation
- Evaluation of soft tissue masses
