About head and neck ultrasound scans

What these scans look at

A head and neck ultrasound uses sound waves to look at the structures just under the skin. There is no radiation. We offer three scans: thyroid ultrasound, general neck ultrasound, and scalp ultrasound.

People often book one for a lump in the neck, thyroid symptoms, an abnormal thyroid blood test, or glands that stay swollen for more than a few weeks. Please see your GP about a new or changing neck lump as well.

On the day, you lie back with a pillow under your shoulders so your neck is comfortable. Gel is applied and a small probe is moved gently over the area. It should not hurt.

Useful for a lump you can feel, or glands that stay swollen. Please see your GP as well.

You simply lie back. Gel and a small probe on the skin, no needles and no radiation.

Report included

Every head and neck scan price includes a written report from a radiologist. Nothing extra to pay.

Common questions

Head and Neck Ultrasound questions, answered

My thyroid blood test was abnormal. Should I have a scan?

A blood test shows how the thyroid is working. An ultrasound looks at its structure, such as swelling or a lump. Your GP can advise which you need, or you can book a GP consultation with us.

I have a lump in my neck. Is a scan the right thing?

An ultrasound can help show what a neck lump looks like and where it sits. It cannot diagnose on its own. Please see your GP too, especially if the lump is growing or you feel unwell.

Do I need to prepare for a thyroid or neck scan?

No special preparation is usually needed. Wear a top with an open or loose neckline if you can. We confirm anything you need to know when you book your appointment.

Does a neck ultrasound hurt?

It should not hurt. You lie back and a small probe with gel is moved over your neck. If an area is tender, tell the person doing your scan and they will take care around it.

Can I talk through my results afterwards?

Yes. A written radiologist report is included with your scan. If you would like to discuss it, we also offer GP consultations as a separate service.
