About this scan

What is a Neck Ultrasound Scan?

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves — no radiation and no injections — to produce real-time images of soft tissues and organs.

A Neck Ultrasound Scan allows your radiologist to examine:

  • Thyroid gland and its lobes
  • Parathyroid glands
  • Salivary glands (submandibular, sublingual, parotid)
  • Lymph nodes in the neck
  • Blood vessels, such as the carotid arteries and jugular veins
  • Soft tissues of the neck

Ultrasound is safe, painless, and radiation-free — making it a first-line investigation for many conditions of the neck ultrasound.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What happens during a neck ultrasound?

You'll lie comfortably while a sonographer applies a warm gel to your neck. They will then gently move a small probe over the area to capture images. The scan is painless and usually takes around 15-30 minutes.

How soon will I get my results?

Your scan images will be reviewed by a UK-certified Consultant Radiologist. You can typically expect your detailed report within 3 working days, available via your secure online patient portal. You can choose to share this report with your GP.

Do I need a referral from my GP for a neck ultrasound?

No, you do not need a GP referral to book a private neck ultrasound at MyScanHub. You can self-refer directly.

How quickly can I get a scan?

Most MRI, ultrasound, and X-ray scans at MyScanHub can be booked same-day or next-day. Walk-in slots are available for X-rays most weekdays.

Do I need a GP referral?

No — MyScanHub accepts self-referral for most scans. Our consultant radiologists review every case. Some scans (e.g. contrast studies) do need a referring clinician; we'll let you know at booking.

When will I get my report?

Written reports from a GMC-registered consultant radiologist are delivered within 3 working days of your scan, often sooner. You can access the report — and the imaging — through your patient account on portal.myscanhub.com.

Is my data kept private?

Yes. MyScanHub is CQC-registered and fully GDPR-compliant. Your imaging and report are encrypted in transit and at rest, and only shared with parties you explicitly authorise.
