About neuro MRI scans

What these scans look at

A neuro MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves to build detailed pictures of the brain, the inner ear canals, the eye sockets, the pituitary gland, the neck and nearby blood vessels. There is no ionising radiation.

People usually book one for headaches that keep coming back, dizziness, hearing or balance changes, visual symptoms, or to follow up something already found on an earlier scan. You do not need a GP referral.

On the day you lie on a padded table that moves into the scanner, and stay as still as you can. MRI is noisy, so you are given ear protection. A radiologist reports your images afterwards.

Extremely easy to book; great appointment choices and superb service — thanks, Becky. Same day booked. Result discussed after scan and report and images emailed within 2 hours. NHS “urgent” referral was 6 months! Highly recommended.

Common questions

Neuro MRI questions, answered

Do I need a GP referral for a brain MRI?

No. You can book any of our neuro MRI scans yourself, online, on 0800 151 2227 or by WhatsApp. If you already have a referral letter or previous scans, bring them so the radiologist has the background.

Which neuro MRI scan do I need?

Each scan looks at a different area. The MRI Brain scan covers the brain, MRI IAM the inner ear canals, and MRI Orbits the eye sockets. If you are not sure which you need, call us on 0800 151 2227 or ask your GP.

What is the scan like on the day?

You lie on a padded table that moves into the scanner and stay as still as you can. MRI is noisy, so you are given ear protection. Tell us about any metal implants, clips or devices before you book, so a clinician can check an MRI is suitable for you.

Will I need contrast dye?

Only if it is clinically required. Contrast (gadolinium) is £120 on top of the scan price. A clinician has to confirm it is needed before you book, so it is never added without that check and your agreement.

What happens after the scan?

A radiologist reviews your images and writes a report, which is included in the price. If you would like someone to go through it with you, you can book a GP consultation as a separate service.
