MRA Carotid Arteries Scan
An MRA of the carotids provides detailed, non-invasive imaging of the carotid arteries in the neck — the major vessels supplying blood to the brain. It is used to assess for narrowing, blockages, plaque buildup, dissections, or stroke risk.
What is an MRA carotid scan?
MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiography) of the carotid arteries uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency pulses — with or without contrast — to visualise:
- Common and internal carotid arteries
- External carotid arteries
- Carotid bifurcation (site of most arterial narrowing)
- Vertebral arteries (when included)
- Flow dynamics and vessel walls
It is typically used for patients with suspected stroke, TIA, or atherosclerosis.
Why consider a private MRA scan of the carotids?
This scan is essential for evaluating vascular health and stroke prevention, especially in patients with risk factors or neurological symptoms.
Benefits of a private MRA include:
- Quick appointments and early diagnosis
- Safer than catheter-based angiograms
- Radiologist-reviewed in 3 working days
- No radiation and minimal side effects
Symptoms that may warrant a carotid MRA
Your doctor may recommend this scan if you experience:
- Sudden weakness, numbness, or facial droop
- Transient vision loss (amaurosis fugax)
- Dizziness, fainting, or slurred speech
- Previous TIA (mini-stroke) or stroke
- Bruit (vascular murmur) on neck auscultation
- Known high cholesterol or carotid plaque
- Cardiovascular risk with family history of stroke
What can a carotid MRA detect?
MRA carotid scans help identify:
- Carotid artery stenosis (narrowing)
- Atherosclerotic plaque and calcifications
- Arterial dissection or trauma
- Carotid occlusion or reduced flow
- Tortuosity or elongation of vessels
- Pre- or post-surgical changes (e.g., carotid endarterectomy)
Preparing for your carotid MRA
Preparation instructions:
- Wear loose-fitting, metal-free clothing
- Remove necklaces, glasses, or hearing aids
- Eat, drink, and take medications as normal
- Bring any past imaging or neurological test results
Please notify the team if you have:
- You have kidney conditions (if contrast is needed)
- You wear a pacemaker
- Pregnancy (especially first trimester)
- You experience anxiety or claustrophobia
