MRA Intracranial Scan
An MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiography) of the intracranial vessels provides detailed imaging of the arteries inside the brain, including the circle of Willis, to evaluate blood flow and detect vascular abnormalities such as aneurysms, stenosis, AVMs, or vessel malformations.
What is an MRA intracranial scan?
An MRA intracranial scan is a specialized MRI sequence that focuses on visualizing the brain’s arterial system without the need for catheter-based angiography.
This scan highlights:
- Intracranial arteries and branches
- Circle of Willis
- Anterior, middle, and posterior cerebral arteries
- Basilar artery and vertebral arteries
- Arterial narrowing, blockage, or aneurysms
It may be performed with or without contrast (Gadolinium), depending on clinical indication.
Why consider a private MRA of the brain’s arteries?
If you're experiencing neurological symptoms, or if your doctor suspects a vascular condition, MRA is a non-invasive, radiation-free tool that provides detailed insights into cerebral circulation.
Benefits of private MRA:
- Fast appointment and report turnaround
- Safer than conventional angiography
- Consultant radiologist interpretation included
- Crucial for early detection of aneurysms or stroke risk
Symptoms that may warrant an intracranial MRA
This scan may be recommended if you have:
- Recurrent or severe headaches
- Transient ischemic attacks (TIAs)
- Dizziness, fainting, or visual aura
- Stroke or mini-stroke symptoms
- Family history of aneurysm or vascular disorders
- Unexplained neurological symptoms or seizures
What can an intracranial MRA detect?
This scan is used to diagnose:
- Brain aneurysms or vascular malformations
- Intracranial arterial narrowing or blockage
- Stroke or post-stroke vascular mapping
- Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs)
- Vascular tumors or anomalies
- Vasculitis or inflammation of blood vessels
- Variations in the circle of Willis
