What these scans look at
A pregnancy ultrasound uses sound waves to make a picture of your baby. There is no radiation. Depending on the stage of your pregnancy, it can help show the heartbeat, your baby's position, and size and growth.
Most people book for reassurance between NHS appointments, to check dates, or to follow growth. These scans are extra to your NHS antenatal care and screening, not a replacement for them, and they are not an emergency service.
On the day, warm gel is used and a small handheld probe is moved over the skin to take the pictures. Most people find it comfortable. You are welcome to bring someone with you, and your written report is included.

Do I need a referral from my midwife or GP?
No. You can book any of our pregnancy scans yourself, online, by phone on 0800 151 2227, or on WhatsApp. The price is fixed and includes a written radiologist report.
Does a private scan replace my NHS antenatal care?
No. These scans are for reassurance, dating, growth and keepsake images. They are extra to, not instead of, your NHS midwife appointments and screening tests. Please keep going to all of your NHS appointments.
Can you tell me if I'm having a boy or a girl?
We can look at your baby's sex at the later stages of pregnancy, but it is never guaranteed. It depends on how your baby is lying, and sometimes we cannot get a clear view. We will always tell you honestly.
Will I get a report I can share with my midwife?
Yes. A written radiologist report is included in the price of every scan, and you are welcome to share it with your midwife or GP. If you would like to talk your results through, GP consultations are available as a separate service.
Is ultrasound safe in pregnancy?
Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation or X-rays. We keep each scan to what is needed. If you have any worries about a scan in pregnancy, speak to your midwife or GP.
