MRI Toe Scan
An MRI of the toe provides high-definition images of the phalanges (toe bones), joints, tendons, ligaments, and surrounding soft tissue. Whether symptoms affect your left, right, or both toes, this scan helps diagnose trauma, inflammation, and joint problems that other imaging may miss.
What is an MRI toe scan?
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves — not radiation — to create detailed internal images.
A toe MRI can target:
- Bone fractures or stress injuries
- Ligamentous and tendon damage
- Synovial inflammation or joint degeneration
- Soft tissue swelling, cysts, or bursitis
- Vascular or nerve abnormalities
Scans can be performed for:
- Left toe
- Right toe
- Both toes (for systemic or symmetrical issues)
Why consider a private MRI scan for the toe?
Toes are structurally small but critical for balance and gait. MRI is the best modality to visualize minute anatomical features that X-rays and ultrasound may miss.
Private scan benefits:
- Appointments available within a few days
- High-resolution imaging to assess unexplained toe pain
- Consultant radiologist report for precise diagnosis
- Critical for evaluating sports injuries, arthritis, or trauma
Symptoms that may warrant a toe MRI
Book this scan if you have:
- Persistent toe pain or tenderness
- Swelling or stiffness in one or more toes
- Clicking or locking during movement
- Pain with walking or footwear pressure
- Pain after trauma (e.g. stubbing or sports injury)
- Signs of arthritis or inflammation
What can a toe MRI detect?
MRI is excellent for detecting:
- Stress fractures and bone bruises
- Ligament tears or joint capsule damage
- Plantar plate tears or sesamoiditis
- Bursitis or synovitis
- Rheumatoid arthritis or gout
- Morton’s neuroma or nerve irritation
- Soft tissue tumors or cysts

Easy preparation steps include:
- Wear loose, metal-free clothing
- Remove all footwear, socks, and jewelry before scan
- Continue eating and medications unless advised otherwise

- You have any metal implants in your foot
