About gastrointestinal MRI scans

What these scans look at

Gastrointestinal MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves to take detailed pictures of the organs in your abdomen and pelvis. That includes the liver, pancreas, kidneys, adrenal glands, small bowel, rectum and the bile ducts. No ionising radiation is used.

People often book one for tummy pain that will not settle, ongoing digestive symptoms, or to keep an eye on a liver, bowel or bile-duct problem they already know about. An MRCP is an MRI that looks at the bile and pancreatic ducts.

On the day, you lie on a padded table that moves into the scanner and stay as still as you can. If any preparation is needed, such as not eating beforehand, we will tell you when you book.

Extremely easy to book; great appointment choices and superb service — thanks, Becky. Same day booked. Result discussed after scan and report and images emailed within 2 hours. NHS “urgent” referral was 6 months! Highly recommended.

Common questions

Gastrointestinal MRI questions, answered

Do I need a referral for an abdominal MRI?

No. You can book any gastrointestinal MRI yourself, online, on 0800 151 2227 or by WhatsApp. If a hospital doctor has asked for a particular scan, tell us the name so we book the right one.

What is an MRCP?

MRCP is an MRI that looks at the bile ducts and pancreatic duct. It is often used when someone has a known gallstone, bile-duct or pancreas problem being monitored. It works the same way as any other MRI.

Will the scan tell me what is causing my tummy pain?

An MRI can help show changes in the organs it looks at, but it cannot promise an answer and some causes do not show on imaging. The radiologist's report sets out what the images show.

My tummy pain is severe and came on suddenly. Should I book?

No. Symptoms like these need to be assessed by a doctor first, not scanned first. Book a scan once you have been seen, and tell us if a hospital doctor has asked for a particular scan.

Do I need contrast for a tummy MRI?

Sometimes. Gadolinium contrast is an optional add-on at £120 and is only used when it is clinically required. It needs clinical confirmation before your booking, so nothing is added unexpectedly.

Is there anything I should tell you before I book?

Yes. MRI uses a strong magnet. Tell us if you have a pacemaker, a metal implant, a clip or any metal in your body, or if you are or might be pregnant. Call 0800 151 2227 if you are not sure.
