What is an MRI Liver Scan?
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses powerful magnets and radiofrequency waves — with no ionising radiation — to create high-resolution cross-sectional images.
An MRI Liver Scan allows your radiologist to examine:
- The liver itself, including its lobes and segments.
- The gallbladder and bile ducts.
- Key blood vessels supplying and draining the liver, such as the portal vein and hepatic veins.
- Surrounding structures like the diaphragm and parts of the upper abdomen.
MRI offers unmatched soft-tissue contrast and is widely used in specialist care for diagnosing and following-up disease of the liver.

Preparing for your MRI Liver Scan
On the day of your scan:
- Please remove all jewellery and metal objects before your scan.
- You'll be asked to complete a safety questionnaire.
- Eat and take your usual medications unless advised otherwise by our team.
- Bring any previous scan reports or relevant medical information with you.
Please notify the team if:
- If you have a pacemaker or implanted defibrillator.
- If you have certain types of cochlear implants or metal clips.
- If there's any chance you might be pregnant, especially in the first trimester.
- If you have ever had metal fragments in your eyes.
Your report
Every MRI at MyScanHub is reported by a GMC-registered consultant radiologist. Your written report is delivered securely to your patient portal within 3 working days.

How long does an MRI liver scan take?
A typical MRI liver scan takes between 30 and 45 minutes to complete, depending on the specific images required.
Will I need contrast dye for my liver MRI?
Contrast dye (gadolinium) is sometimes used to improve the visibility of certain structures or abnormalities. This is an optional add-on, costing an additional £120, and will only be administered if clinically required and confirmed before your appointment.
Can I have a liver MRI if I'm claustrophobic?
We understand that enclosed spaces can be challenging. Our MRI scanner is designed to be as comfortable as possible, and our radiographers are experienced in supporting anxious patients. Please discuss any concerns with us when booking.
When will I get my results?
Your scan images and a detailed report from a UK-certified Consultant Radiologist will be available via your secure online patient portal, usually within 3 working days of your appointment. You can then download or share these results, or have them sent to your GP.
Do I need a GP referral?
No — MyScanHub accepts self-referral for most scans. Our consultant radiologists review every case. Some scans (e.g. contrast studies) do need a referring clinician; we'll let you know at booking.
When will I get my report?
Written reports from a GMC-registered consultant radiologist are delivered within 3 working days of your scan, often sooner. You can access the report — and the imaging — through your patient account at myscanhub.com.
Where is the clinic?
Our imaging centre is at Bluewater Shopping Centre, Dartford, Kent (DA9 9ST), in the Guildhall Outer Car Park — free parking, a few minutes from junction 2 of the M25 and the A2. We're open Monday to Saturday 8am–9pm and Sunday 10am–5pm. Full directions are sent with your booking confirmation.
