Scan Types / MRI Pancreas Scan
MRI Pancreas Scan
An MRI of the pancreas provides high-resolution imaging of the pancreatic tissue, ducts, surrounding vessels, and adjacent organs. It is commonly used to evaluate chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic tumors, cysts, and ductal abnormalities — offering a safer and more detailed alternative to CT scans.
What is an MRI pancreas scan?
An MRI pancreas scan uses advanced imaging sequences, sometimes paired with MRCP (Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography), to visualise:
- Pancreatic head, body, and tail
- Main and accessory pancreatic ducts
- Adjacent bile ducts and ampullary region
- Peripancreatic lymph nodes and vessels
- Surrounding structures (duodenum, stomach, spleen)
Contrast-enhanced MRI helps differentiate benign vs malignant lesions, especially in difficult-to-reach areas.
Why consider a private MRI scan for the pancreas?
When pancreatic disease is suspected, MRI provides superior tissue contrast and safer long-term follow-up — without radiation exposure.
Advantages of private MRI:
- Safer than repeated CT scans
- High sensitivity for tumors, cysts, or ductal dilation
- Rapid appointment and diagnosis
- Consultant radiologist report within 3 working days
Symptoms that may warrant a pancreatic MRI
Your doctor may recommend this scan if you have:
- Chronic or recurrent upper abdominal pain
- Jaundice or dark urine
- Abnormal amylase/lipase blood tests
- Weight loss or loss of appetite
- Pancreatic cyst seen on ultrasound
- History of pancreatitis or suspected pancreatic cancer
What can a pancreatic MRI detect?
MRI is highly effective in identifying:
- Chronic and acute pancreatitis
- Pancreatic tumors (e.g., adenocarcinoma)
- Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs)
- Pancreatic cysts and pseudocysts
- Ductal narrowing or obstruction
- Vascular involvement and staging of malignancy
- Autoimmune pancreatitis
