Preparing for your MRI Rectum Scan
On the day of your scan:
- Remove all jewellery and metal objects before entering the scanning room.
- Complete a safety questionnaire to ensure the scan is suitable for you.
- You can usually eat and take your regular medications as normal.
- Wear comfortable clothing; you may be asked to change into a gown.
Please notify the team if:
- If you have a pacemaker or defibrillator.
- If you have any metal implants, such as aneurysm clips or cochlear implants.
- If you have ever had metal fragments in your eyes (e.g., from drilling or hammering).
- If you are pregnant, especially in the first trimester.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a rectal MRI take?
A single-part MRI scan typically takes between 30 and 45 minutes to complete. Your appointment will be longer to allow for preparation and discussion.
What happens if I feel claustrophobic during the scan?
Our MRI scanner is a wider bore model, and our radiographers are experienced in supporting patients who feel anxious. Please let us know when you book if you have concerns about claustrophobia.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No, you can self-refer for a private MRI scan at MyScanHub. You do not need a GP referral to book your appointment.
Can I have a contrast agent during my rectal MRI?
A gadolinium contrast agent can be added for an additional fee (£120) if clinically required. This decision is usually made based on your symptoms and medical history, and may need clinical confirmation before booking.
Do I need a GP referral?
No — MyScanHub accepts self-referral for most scans. Our consultant radiologists review every case. Some scans (e.g. contrast studies) do need a referring clinician; we'll let you know at booking.
When will I get my report?
Written reports from a GMC-registered consultant radiologist are delivered within 3 working days of your scan, often sooner. You can access the report — and the imaging — through your patient account at myscanhub.com.
Where is the clinic?
Our imaging centre is at Bluewater Shopping Centre, Dartford, Kent (DA9 9ST), in the Guildhall Outer Car Park — free parking, a few minutes from junction 2 of the M25 and the A2. We're open Monday to Saturday 8am–9pm and Sunday 10am–5pm. Full directions are sent with your booking confirmation.
