About this scan

What is an MRI Soft Tissue (Region of Interest) Scan?

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses powerful magnets and radiofrequency waves — with no ionising radiation — to create high-resolution cross-sectional images.

An MRI Soft Tissue (Region of Interest) Scan allows your radiologist to examine:

  • Muscles and their fibres
  • Tendons and their attachments
  • Ligaments and their integrity
  • Fatty tissues
  • Blood vessels (with contrast, if needed)
  • Nerves running through soft tissue areas

MRI offers unmatched soft-tissue contrast and is widely used in specialist care for diagnosing and following-up disease of the soft tissue region of interest.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How long does a soft tissue MRI take?

A typical MRI scan of a single soft tissue area takes between 30 to 45 minutes. Your appointment may be longer to allow for preparation and discussion.

Can I have a contrast agent with my soft tissue MRI?

An optional gadolinium contrast agent can be added for £120 if clinically required. This helps to highlight certain structures or abnormalities more clearly. We need clinical confirmation before booking a contrast study.

What happens after my MRI scan?

Your scan images will be reviewed by a UK-certified Consultant Radiologist. You'll receive your detailed report via a secure online portal within 3 working days. You can view, download, and share your images and report. We can also send the report to your GP if you wish.

Is an MRI scan painful?

MRI scans are generally painless. You'll lie inside the scanner, which can be noisy. We offer support for anxious patients, including wider-bore scanners and trained radiographers.

Do I need a GP referral?

No — MyScanHub accepts self-referral for most scans. Our consultant radiologists review every case. Some scans (e.g. contrast studies) do need a referring clinician; we'll let you know at booking.

When will I get my report?

Written reports from a GMC-registered consultant radiologist are delivered within 3 working days of your scan, often sooner. You can access the report — and the imaging — through your patient account at myscanhub.com.
